Pulmonology Treatments & Procedures

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition that affects the airways in the lungs. The airways are tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus which makes breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath. There is no cure for asthma but with proper management, asthma patients can also live a normal, healthy life.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that most often affect the lungs. TB can affect any organ in the body. 4S - (Cough for > 2 weeks, persistent fever for > 2 weeks, significant weight loss, night sweats) with history of contact with TB case should be offered TB diagnostic tests (Sputum and Radiology) to diagnose and treat at the earliest. Inadequate and Improper management leads to emergence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) tuberculoisis. MDR TB is a serious condition that needs long treatment duration with multiple drugs.

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)

ILD or DPLD (Diffuse parenchymal lung disease) - large group of diseases that cause inflammation and scarring in your lungs. It comprises more than 200 conditions. The most common causes are idiopathic, connective tissue diseases, Sarcoidosis, Hypersenstivity reactions, drug induced and genetic conditions. The most common symptom of all ILDs is shortness of breath, dry cough, chest discomfort, fatigue and occasionally weight loss. Novel radiology services helps in detecting the ILD at the initial stage and start treatment to prevent the complications. Newer drugs are available to slow down the ongoing fibrosis in Progressive Fibrosing ILD (PF-ILD).

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in both men and women. Smoking is the most important risk factor for lung cancer. The USPSTF recommends annual screening for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in adults aged 50 to 80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Common symptoms are chronic cough, chest pain, coughing blood, weight loss. Imaging tests, such as a chest x-ray or chest CT scan with Transthoracic or endobronchial biopsy of the lung will help to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment will depend on which type of lung cancer, how far it has spread(STAGE), your overall health, and other factors.

Sleep Related Breathing Disorder

Sleep-related breathing disorders are conditions of abnormal and difficult respiration during sleep, including chronic snoring and sleep apnea. The spectrum ranges from normal breathing, occasional snoring, regular snoring, UARS, mild, moderate and severe sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most common and serious sleep-related breathing disorders is likely underdiagnosed but its prevalence will increase in the future along with growing rates of obesity, which is one of the major risk factor. Sleep study will help to identify this problem and to start appropriate treatment to prevent future complications.

COPD – Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic disease that is often preventable and treatable. About 85 to 90 percent of all COPD cases are caused by cigarette smoking. Air pollution, second hand smoke and dust, fumes and chemicals (which are often work-related) and genetic condition can also cause COPD.
